What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a procedure to remove the end portion of skin (known as foreskin) that covers the head of the penis. In an otherwise healthy newborn who is being considered for circumcision, the procedure will most likely be done within the first few days or weeks after birth. It usually takes 15- 30 minutes and is often performed under a local anesthetic.

Most babies recover quickly from a circumcision. At first, the incision (cut) will be red and the glans (head of the penis) will look like it has been scraped. The area may be tender, but this will lessen over the first couple of days. The penis may also have some redness and swelling and have some yellow crust on the head in particular for up to a couple of weeks. This is usually normal and is not a sign of infection, however, if there is any concern, you should discuss with your doctor immediately.

Benefits of Circumcision

Most parents choose circumcision for religious, cultural or cosmetic reasons. Other parents might consider routine circumcision for medical reasons.

Some possible health benefits are:

Fewer urinary tract infections (UTI). Studies have shown that 1 in 3 uncircumcised males are likely to experience a UTI over their lifetime, as compared to 1 in 12 circumcised males.

To lower the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.

To decrease the risk of cancer of the penis. Circumcision can slightly reduce the risk of getting this type of cancer, which occurs much later in life and is very rare. Female partners of circumcised men have less chance of getting cervical cancer.

To prevent the need for circumcision later in life. Ten out of every 1,000 uncircumcised boys will need a circumcision later in life due to a condition that can scar and narrow the foreskin.

It can also reduce risk of phimosis which is inability to retract (pull back) the foreskin.

The Procedure of circumcision

We use Plastibell Technique in our clinic and it has 6 steps:

Are there risks to circumcision?

All surgeries may have some risks. The possible risks of circumcision are:

  • Mild redness and mild swelling are the most common to happen which usually resolves gradually without any intervention.
  • Severe swelling and redness are rare but if happens, you need to consult with the doctor.
  • Mild bleeding which usually stops on its own.  Severe bleeding is very rare. Our method rarely has any bleeding.
  • Infection is very rare and usually stays within the circumcision site which may need antibiotics.
  • Our method compared to other methods of Circumcision, has the lowest rate of complications.

Care After Circumcision

We will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your son’s circumcised penis.

Here are some general tips:

Change your son’s diaper as you would normally.

Wash the penis with warm water, if it is contaminated with stool.

Wiping might cause irritation, clean gently to prevent pain.

Keep the area clean and apply polypyrene antibiotic or petroleum jelly to prevent any sticking.

Although the area may appear quite red and swollen, this is rarely a sign of infection.

Mild oozing and bleeding in the first few hours can be normal. However if the bleeding is severe or longer than a few hours, you need to discuss with your doctor.
